  1. Amen!

I despise him less for taking steroids and more the halfheartedly "apologizing" (only after he got caught) and trying to place blame on the culture of bseball at the time. (Everybody else was doing it,etc.)

  2. You are so right, Tom. Be a man - stand up and take your hits. What should behis consequences. One has already started - his starness is tarnished. Will he still be considered for the Hall? What about endorsements? Look what happened to Michael Phelps. What a mess and what a disappointment due to the man who WAS one of the game's biggest ambassadors.

  3. Will A-Roid make the Hall? I'll defer to Jeff, who actually gets to cast a vote, but I say no.

  4. There's a ground swell of fans (and to some extent, media) who are banging the drum of tolerance: "Hey, EVERYBODY was doing it." That doesn't change the fact that these guys CHEATED. Many fans may counter: "There are a lot of guys in the Hall of Fame who cheated." That may be true, but I can't do anything about that. I can't put the toothpaste back into the tube. I can only go by what my gut tells me, and sorry, but I cannot vote for a guy who "respects the game" so much that he cheats. That, by the way, was an outrageous statement by A-ROiD. Respect? Taking steroids not only disrespects the game, it disrespects me -- the baseball fan.

Some folks seem to be "impressed" by A-ROiD's "courage" for admitting he was a user. Courage? For admitting that he did it only after the evidence came to light? That's not courage; that's covering your rear end. And his answers are so weak. Does he actually think we believe he doesn't know what he took or who gave it to him? And while we're at it, who paid for it anyway?

I believe that A-ROiD will make the Hall of Fame someday, but unless they change the rules (which state that voters must consider a candidate's character), he won't get my vote. Put yourself in my place. If you give A-ROiD your Hall of Fame vote because "everybody was doing it," doesn't that just condone the cheating? I have to ask those people who support the steroid users: Are you OK with that? Are you comfortable standing up and shouting, "Cheating is just fine with me"?

  5. I agree, Jeff. And maybe I'm a hypocrite but I see a big difference between cheating (throwing a spitball like Gaylord Perry or scuffing the ball like Mike Scott) and taking illegal substances that make you bigger and stronger.

  6. The intent is the same. It's a conscious decision to do whatever it takes -- or whatever you think you can get away with -- to get ahead. If it wasn't cheating, they'd simply inject themselves right there in the clubhouse in front of everyone.
