Is Leyland a lame duck?

One of the Free Press sports writers had a column today, calling Leyland a lame duck. He is only signed through this season. He wanted an extension, but it was not granted after last year. Basically, last year we hired a bunch of ball players, but they wre never formed in to a team - last time I checked that is what Jim is paid for. He worked wonders in 2006, but some of it was started by Trammell. What is Leyland's future? Is he better suited to be a National League maanger? Whay say ye?

  1. Let's put it to a vote next week: Is he gone by Opening Day 2010, will he stay, or does it depend on how the team performs in 2009, and he can keep all the smoke from killing him?

My bet? The latter. If he brings in a playoff team he'll be invited back. Multiple years if they win the World Series. Otherwise, he should be looking for some nice property in Arizona or Florida, because the Tigers gave him all the tools in '08 and '09, and couldn't get the job done. No big league team will want him after that.

  2. I think Leyland is a good manager who had bad or injured players last year. I'm not sure if another manager could have done a better job in '08. He might be best with a veteran team. Not sure how patient he is w/ younger players.

  3. I agree with Tom almost up and down the line. I didn't realize that the Tigers had an young players, however.

  5. Leyland may have stuck too long w/ unproductive vets last year when he could have played young guys like Mayy Joyce or Jeff Larish.

  6. He has to finish a strong second or better and be playing for something in September or he is a goner. Pitching will tell the story, because they will score runs. They are much better defensively with Inge and Everitt on the left side, although if Inge doesn't hit at least 260 he is useless, regardless how good his glove is.
