Ray Oyler and Ryan Rayburn

Both struggled offensively - but there is a place for them. Did Oyler even his weight? Through the canny magerial ability of Mayo Smith there was a place for Oyler on that 68 roster. And Smith figured how to get our hero - Al Kaline - into his only world series.
Now what sghould Leyland do with Rayburn?

  1. Chuckles,

I can see that you are feeling better. You should not be discussing Raburn. The discussion needs to be about Inge. They both need to go, but at least Inge can catch a cold and does get lucky on occasion. You can always count on him not getting the big hit. Raburn can't hit or field, and is 30 years old. I would have kept Sizemore and given them Raburn. I am sure that Cale Iorg can hit .200 and be close to leading the league in strikeouts. At least he can catch a cold and a baseball.

  2. and in defense of Ray Oyler...1968 was truly a different era, when you could carry a guy like that on a team with guys like Kaline, Horton, Cash, etc. ahead of him in the lineup. A year later brought the DH, and the beginning of the end of the dominant pitcher. (beginning, not the end.) Oyler's glove was a thing of beauty, but did he ever play a full season again?
