How 'bout that Rod Allen

With all of the time off I have had - I have watched much Tiger baseball. The analysis provided by Rod Allen is right on. Yesterday when Michael Young came to the plate, Rod commented that Young is the most dangerous hitter in the Rangers lineup. Young promptly doubled - exactly as Allen predicted. Today the Tigers brought in Villarreal to pitch. Allen commented that Jim brought in Villarreal to pitch because of his superb move to first base. He no sooner got that out of his mouth when Villarreal caught Borbon leading off too far for the third out, without throwing a pitch. Then in the bottom of the 9th Cabrera came up witht he bases loaded and Rod commented, "no disrespect to O'Day, but he doesn't have a pitch that can get out Cabrera." and then Cabrera hit a game winning single. Awesome. Those of you with brighter minds ight say those are all obvious statements, but Rod made them on alive TV broadcast. "You go Rod!"

  1. WELCOME BACK, PIO! Great to see your thoughts again, even though I'm just now watching the TIVO of the game, and only got to the 5th inning - you ruined it for me!
Just kidding, I should have known better than to look here in the "middle" of the game.
I'm glad they won, but the Bengals are still making major boners. (and I don't mean the good kind.) Like earlier in the game, with one out, and Josh Hamilton on third, Penney got the batter to pop up in foul territory on the left size. This was no little squirt, it was a big-league popup.
Inge and Martinez tracked the pop up, and Inge caught it, but (as Harry Carey used to say) "Holy Cow" nobody was covering home plate, so Hamilton came trundling down the basepath. Fortunately, Martinez got there just in time to tag him out, but shouldn't Cabrera or Penney have been standing on the plate, eliminating such a trecherous play? Personally, I think it should have been Cabrera, as Penney was just finishing his follow through on his pitch, but hey, you know me, always looking for a reason to chastize Miggie. Like that beautiful double play he rand into yesterday.

  2. Chuck, you are so right. I am continuously amazed at Rod Allen's "instincts" when it comes to predicting what might happen. Your timing on this subject is great, too. In the pressbox on opening day, I overheard a couple of guys chatting with him over lunch, and one of them said, "Rod, it's crazy how often you call something the moment before it happens." I guess if you make 10 predictions and two are correct, most people will remember the two. But I swear 75% of the time, Rod Allen is right on. We're lucky to have him.
