Leyland has to go

Jim is certainly very knowledgable about the game, but he seems to have lost his ability to motivatthe Boys!  If he put as much into motivating the whole team as he did  to helping Ryan Rayburn and Don Kelly - we would be in first place. I am not counting the Tigers out, but i do believe that Jim has to go - win or lose.  Terry Francona?  Kirk Gibson?  I believe over half the job is motivating.  Look at what Ventrua has done in Chicago.
Come on Tigers - fire up!

  1. Chuck, I disagree. If major league baseball players can't motivate themselves it is not the manager's responsibility to try to motivate them. All he can do is bench players if he feels they lack motivation and are not producing.

  2. Motivating IS the job of any boss. Making out the lineup card or deciding when to pull a pitcher is something any of us could do: sometimes you make a good decision, sometimes not. Sure, every employee should be self-motivated, but have you ever had a great boss who got that extra little bit out of you? I have, and it's a great experience. As Chuck has pointed out before, Leyland is a .500 manager who has been given some great teams. It's time to retire, buddy.

  3. Tom, I agree with you 100%. It is the responsibility of ay major leauge ballplayer, Husband, father, photographer, business owner to motivate themselves. God gives us all opportunity - what we chose to do with it is our choice. In the ball player's case - they are paid millions to perform - too often some of them appear to be going through the motions. Shame on them!! Managers have to weave them together into a tapestry (from an awesome book entitled To Heaven and Back). If any thread is incomplete on the tapestry, the tapestry will fall apart. Hence the situation the Tigers are in. And the September 1st callups will not make a difference. Leyland or Davey Johnson or Robin Ventura or Joe Girardi MUST LEAD - notice that 3 of the 4 names are in first place of the names I mentioned. Leyland has let me down. This weekend will seal the fate of the Tigers this season. GO GET "EM TIGERS!!

  4. Chuck, I'm glad we agree. I'm not the biggest Leyland fan, but I think he's done as well as he can with the roster Dombrowski gave him. SS and 2B have been weak spots all year. Bullpen has been inconsistent. White Sox might just have the better team. We'll know more after this weekend.

  5. When the Titanic sank Capt. Smith wasn't steering the ship...but he's in command and takes the responsibility. Same deal here...Leyland has to take responsibilty...and it's time to go.

  6. What if the Tigers win the AL Central? Does Leyland walk the plank then?
