Magic number down to 6.
Thereis no denying what a phenomenal season Miggy is having at the plate. He is lots of people's favorite Tiger and, looking at his stats, there are many good reasons why.
I am still troubles by the incident in spring training with the drinking, having open alcohol in the car, and his disrespect of the police. I maintain that if it had been me, I would have been hauled off to the pokey, no questions asked. Miggy got star treatment, back then. Because of his great season all seems to be forgiven, but is it. Remember in 2006 when he and his wife got into an alcohol-related fight. Who am I to judge?

Star treatment? I seem to remember he was arrested, charged and released pending trial. Same thing would happen to you or me.
ReplyDeletewhen is his trial? yours or mine would have already happened, but we are not pro baseball players/ allegedly role models.
ReplyDeleteSorry that I have to click onh anonymous it is the ponly way I can respond
It was scheduled for July 12. Can't find anything saying if it took place yet or not. Also if you or I were arrested for drunk driving if it made the media at all it would be buried at the back of the paper not on the front page. And a pro athlete's job is not to be a role model.
ReplyDeleteA pro athlete's job may not to be a role model per his contract, but what kid does not wanna imitate Cabrera or Mickey Mantle or Al Kaline from our day. As for his trial July 12th, somebody looked the other way to get a postponement is my guess. After the season he will get a slap on the wrist, just like he did in 2006, when the Tigers looked the other way when we WERE in the playoffs. The signs are there and no action is being taken - wonder how Manny Ramnirez is doing in jail? I have to admit there is probably a few occasions that I should not have driven in my younger days - now my wife drives or we call one of our kids. My drunk driving would probably only make the obituaries; hope Cabrera wakes up before his does!
ReplyDeleteBut Chuck (and anon., is that you J.D.?)brings up a good point, and one that troubles me too. Miggy is clearly an alcoholic. We don't have to "judge him" to know that he is shortening his career (perhaps fatally) by his actions.
ReplyDeleteThings are peachy right now, but in the winter, maybe we can trade him for a good pitcher and a few prospects.
Cabrera was not on the 2006 Tigers team that went to the WS.Maybe I'm in the minority but while I liked and respected pro athletes as a kid I never thought they were role models or wanted to be like them (except in their ability to play the game).
ReplyDeleteGregg, on what basis can you say Cabrera is "clearly an alcoholic"? None of us here are qualified to make that diagnosis.
